Thankful Thursday

Many of my coworkers on vacation will be back next week.
A friend got a job offer.
Enjoyed the three-day weekend (America’s Memorial Day, for non-North Americans).
Got some longer walks in over the weekend.
A husband who likes to cook.

Sidebar Updates: Healthcare and new FA feed

A couple updates to the right sidebar I thought were worth noting:
New Links section: Healthcare Resources for Fat Folks.  This includes links to:

The Fat-Friendly Professionals list, maintained by Stef.  This list compiles referrals from fat people all over – please use it and submit recommendations as appropriate.  There are also tips on how to approach [...]

Day in the Life: Café Au Lait Truffles

I’ve had See’s Café Au Lait truffles on my brain for a couple weeks now.  Not just any chocolate, mind.  Not an assortment.  I wanted the rich, yummy coffee filling.
(It’s funny that coffee isn’t something you find in many candies.  There’s Ritter Sport Cappuccino, which is also delicious, and chocolate-covered espresso beans, which vary. [...]

Cathy: You’ll Fill Out After Childbirth!

For those of you who don’t read Cathy, her noticably fat in-laws have moved in (with no notice).  Cathy went to the mall to try swimsuits alone…and ran into her mother-in-law, who’s trying on a larger size of the same swimsuit.
MIL: You came shopping to escape me, but of course, you can’t do that! You [...]

Today’s Logic Puzzle

In 2005, sources reported that:

3% to 5%
of US adults were morbidly obese (BMI > 40)

25%
of US adults were obese (BMI > 30)

66%
of US adults were overweight OR obese (BMI > 25)

Yet newspapers and television tend to illustrate articles about the “OMG Obesity Panic!!1!! Most Americans are fat!!!” with images of extremely fat people like myself?   [...]

Thankful Thursday

[Another weekly exercise in gratitude.]
1) Started doing full squats again* – not very many, and not using any extra weights, but even so, I am pleased with this progress.  ;)
2) Finished a big rollout at work, which has seriously reduced my stress.
3) Three-day weekend coming up.
4) The insurance company finally approved the prescription antihistamine, which [...]

Family, Fat, and Duh

I’m glancing through a study (The Stigma of Obesity: A Review and Update) that Kate tweeted about this morning. It’s pretty dense in a “lot of good information” way and I’m pretty sure I’ll be going back to it later when I can really focus.  I skim through sections on employment, health care, education, and interpersonal [...]

Monday Morning Smile?

Last week at work was much more on the stressful side than I wanted. Usually I pack up the week’s worries when I shut down my computer and neaten my office; this week it was Sunday before I really let go of the stress.
Tomorrow I go back. So I’m going to include a few [...]

Friday Fun: How’d You Find This Blog?

WordPress has lots of nifty stats for its blogs.  One in particular I’ve been watching lately: Search Terms. See, if you google something and find my blog? Google passes on what you searched on, and WordPress keeps track of it (without anything about the actual  users involved…though WordPress assures me it doesn’t count my visits [...]

Thankful Thursday

This is one of those weeks where I’d rather be venting about the stressy stuff and not looking for things to be grateful for.  But … that’s also part of why I do it, to focus on the good instead of the bad.
1) New CPAP mask arrived from cpap.com.
2) A friend asked to borrow [...]

Fat Yoga in the News

I was surprised to see an article on yoga classes that target fat people in a mainstream newspaper (in this case The New York Times).  Overall it’s a good article.  The main thrust is that different body types can result in needing to adapt poses.
Poses considered standard for those who are fit or slim — [...]

HAES in the News

Marianne Kirby & Kate Harding are interviewed in Newsweek’s blog The Human Condition about their book and HAES.  Hopefully it will make some people think!
In the UK, The Guardian had a piece about Health At Every Size.  As Big Fat Blog notes, it’s all HAES 101 stuff, but that’s why it’s good to get it out [...]
